Inner Strength

Kwe Kwe Maya,

I am really proud of you for making this journey. I think you are capable of many things. Be confident! May this travel on the Chilkoot connect you to your inner strength and may you be blessed with a light load to carry.

Much love!

A New Perspective

Sometimes looking down ain’t so bad – there are your feet! And plenty of gorgeous tiny flowers you may have never noticed.

And when you look up again, the views are even more grand, thanks to your new perspective.

End of the Season and Wow!

postcard stackThe rangers have all returned from the trail and I’ve just had the first estimates from park headquarters. There are over 600 postcards filled out over the summer! What an amazing response!

I’ll be posting postcards throughout the winter as part of our memory archive. If you’d like to make a small donation to help me cover the mailing costs, please use the link at the side. We plan to keep this project going next year and hopefully for many years to come! Looking forward to next season at the top of Chilkoot Pass.

Return to the Trail

This summer I’ll be back on the Chilkoot Trail from July 5-9!  I’m excited to revisit my memories 4 years later and see how the trail has changed and how it has remained unchanged. Even more, I am looking forward to meeting new travelers and maybe even running into some ghosts from the past.

While I will only be on the trail for 5 days this time (a much faster pace than my 2 week journey in 2012), the Klondike Letters Project will continue all summer with postcards at the top of the pass. If you are hiking at any point this summer, be sure to stop for a moment and record a memory for your future self. What will you put in this space?

Always fresh, always seeing

The Chilkoot Trail opens for the summer today! Happy Hiking!!

Belly full of warm soup which is nicely spreading through my body, extending down to my fingers. Listening to the windows rattle, slightly dreading going back out... what I want to remember is the look on Yanik's face as he reached the summit, and hearing the enjoyment (excitement!) in his voice as he said that this was his favorite day thus far. I want to remember to see the world like that: always fresh, always seeing. Huzzah!

An atom in the universe

Behind vs civilization... before us vastness silence grandeur - stand alone on the summit... and realize what an atom in the universe you are. But there is little time for resting... and none for dreaming.

This amazing snickers bar!

Hi self, It's 2012 right now and I'm obviously 16 years old. My hand's shaking so bad I can barely write. I'm about to eat this amazing snickers bar. I just climbed the Golden Staircase, and reached the f***ing summit. It was a lot different than all of the other stuff I've done. I don't know where I'll be a year later right now but I hope it's somewhere good. P.S. I love you self!

In honor of a great man

I write this in honor of a great man. A great-grand-father to my dear children. Born July 1,1917, passed away today: July 1,2012. A Historic moment for a fine family. Sad profound news to be learned by way of satellite phone. A call from the edge of the country the top of this mountain pass made on modern communication. And now I know he has left this earth shortly after celebrating his 95th birthday. And the world is a little lonelier today. Fare thee well.
